The Hunger Games lacking a touch of suspense...

I recently watched the film not having read the books but I had heard about it from people reading it and it didn't live up to my expectations...

Based on the books "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins, it tells the tale of a sort of a "science-fictiony", futuristic human society called Panem, It is divided into 12 districts and a Capitol. There is an event that takes place every year in this society which involves the selection of two members, a girl and a boy, of each district aged between the ages of 12 and 17 to fight to the death until there is only one survivor, this survivor is then rewarded handsomely and can return home. There is an interesting system for the selection of the participants, each person aged between 12 and 17 have their name submitted once unless you've agreed to have multiple submissions in exchange for food, supplies, etc... This ridiculous and horrible event is the result of a revolution that happened a long time ago which involved a rebellion of all the districts, The whole event is televised and the people of Panem are required to watch it and support their district participants, it is entertainment though it is still considered to be a retribution for the rebellion. We follow a girl named Katniss who is 16 years old and who volunteers herself when her little sister, who has only just turned 12, is picked as a participant. She and her district 12 partner are faced against better trained and ruthless competitors. The film is an action, drama, thriller, sci-fi directed by Gary Ross. Now, from what I was told about the film and read up about myself was that it was a book full of suspense and excitement but I found that the film did not portray much of these elements. I found that the pace of the film was a little too slow and it was way too predictable even to someone who hadn't read the books. The director had all the elements needed to make a film full of suspense but he didn't exploit this to its fullest at all! Some scenes could have been made so that we were aching to find out what was just about to happen next but this feeling never arose. The only moment that actually made me feel any kind of feeling was when the bizarre dog creature jumped out of the bushes and even that was too predictable! And of course, we all knew who the winners were going to be from the start, it's a classic "anti-heros become the heros" film, Katniss and Peeta (the other district 12 participant) seemed so clueless and unprepared for the event and yet they manage to win. Anyway, this post is starting to become rather long so I'll conclude with my ratings.

A Classic Quentin Tarantino!

An all time classic that just can't be forgotten nor can not not be watched!

Who could ignore the genius of this film? One of Quentin Tarantino's greatest in my opinion. It's a classic an it's a must see if you're interested in film in the slightest! You can't say that you've watched films if you haven't seen it! I highly recommended this amazing criminal thriller because it's simply a masterpiece. It was released in 1994 and is set in a fictional country but we can just assume that it's set in a late 80's/early 90's America. The John Travolta/Samuel L. Jackson combo is like electric dynamite. The film is based around four stories which all end up being entwined. It opens with two small time thieves in a diner which don't seem to have much importance at first... Our main characters are two hitmen, Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vegas, who are trying to recover a stolen suitcase that belongs to their employer Marsellus Wallace. Vincent has also been assigned to take care of Marsellus' wife Mia by taking her out when he's not around. We also encounter a boxer, Butch Coolidge who has been paid by Wallace to go down in his next fight. All of these peoples' lives are weaved together thanks to a series of very unusual, funny and thrilling events!

It's a film like none other in the way that it's filmed and put together and the story line is sublime and original. The only unoriginal factor in this film is the mafia/mobster/crime idea that the film is based around. Apart from that, flawlessly enjoyable and amazingly original, especially for its time!

Originality 9/10

Guy Ritchie with the London Mobsters... again!

Well to start off with I thought I'd mention one of my all time favorites - Rock 'n' Rolla

This film is now a little over 4 years old but it's a truly amazing film. It's by director Guy Ritchie which I'm sure you've all heard of (obviously). It's an action, crime, thriller and is based in 21st century London. It follows the same story all from different angles and different twists. The main plot is about a man called Lennie Cole, he's a london mob boss and he also owns all the real estate transactions around London. He's been scamming people by interfering with their real estate paper-work thanks to his control over all sections of the business. It's only when he deals with a big Russian developer Uri Omovich that his previous "clientèle", two members of the Wild Bunch, interfere with Uri's transactions. This means trouble for Lennie because this means that he'll have to return Uri's lucky painting that he's lost, to his pothead rockstar "son" at that. This means that Lennie has to find Jonny Quid, who's said to have drowned, and retrieve the painting before the Russians get too suspicious and before the Wild Bunch cause anymore disruptions with his deal with Uri...
As much as I love this film, there is something that just can't be neglected and that's the fact that this is another one of Guy Ritchie's London gangster films! If you watch his films you do come to realize that a lot of them follow a similar pattern and a similar plot. This is not to say that it isn't fun and enjoyable but it does mean that it hits quite low on the "Originality Scale" and I do find this element to be killer in many films. Overall I fully recommend watching it if you haven't already and I'd love to hear your opinions and ratings of this film!

Hello

Hi, I'm here to give you advice on what films are interesting and fun to watch! I love to watch films and have been doing so for a very long time! I want to be able to express my opinions on whether or not a film is worth while and if so what its strong points are and maybe its weakness' if I didn't enjoy it! Obviously, being new to the blogging community, I'll start off by posting my opinions on films I've watched recently and will then proceed by taking suggestions and telling you what I think so that you don't need to watch a film that's not going to be worth while! Or if you just want a third party opinion on a film you've watched! I hope that you enjoy everything that I give and that we can make this a fun and successful blog!
